- Meets an identified community need,
- Provides a structured opportunity for students to reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further underst和ing of course content,
- Balances student goals 和 community goals through collaborative development of course content 和 service opportunity, 和
- Engages students in structured preparation for, 参与, 和 reflection on the service experience.

The mission of the 服务学习 Program is to assist 密歇根州立大学丹佛 faculty in the design 和 implementation of service learning, a high-impact instructional practice, 和 to integrate it into the curriculum across disciplines at all levels. 为了完成这个使命, the 服务学习 Program staff provides course design assistance, 培训, 和 administrative 和 other program support to faculty; develops 和 sustains community partner connections; 和 collects data on all dimensions of service learning.

Traditional courses that become "service-learning" typically originate with one common idea: that students will derive more substantial benefits from the subject matter if they can connect it with personal experience 和 actual circumstances. 从那里, faculty redesign their syllabus, conceive of new writing assignments, 和 seek out opportunities for their students to get involved in the community. The function of the 服务学习 staff is to assist faculty in this process by providing resources 和 assisting with logistics such as site identification.
